November 13, 2007 Sheets named Special BoilermakerWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Alumni Association has named Debra Sheets, a staff member in the Office of the Registrar, the 2007 Special Boilermaker.Sheets received the award at the Nov. 10 football game against Michigan State. Established in 1981, the Special Boilermaker Award honors a person who has contributed significantly to improving the quality of life or bettering the educational experience for Purdue students. Selection criteria emphasize contributions such as the initiative shown in creating solutions to problems; unselfishly contributing time and effort; devoting efforts beyond the expectations of one's professional role; and participating in activities that enhance the growth of and respect for the university. Sheets, a Purdue employee for more than 30 years, was chosen because of her dedication to the well-being and success of students. Kirk Cerny, executive director and chief executive officer of the alumni association, said Sheets embodies the Boilermaker spirit. "Although in an administrative role, Sheets often works one-on-one with students, especially during the first week of classes when schedules are frequently changed," Cerny said. "Her commitment to students and to the university she loves shows how much she deserves this truly special honor."
