November 13, 2007 Purdue class offers college survival tipsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University is offering a spring class to help current and future college students survive in the classroom. The Continuing Education Division will offer the 16-week class "How to Survive at College" starting Jan. 8 on Tuesday evenings from 6-8:50 p.m. The class is open to anyone, including adults returning to school, incoming college freshmen, and those wanting to learn to study faster and more efficiently. "Too many students spin their wheels when they study," said Sara Jane Coffman, instructional development specialist and course instructor. "Putting information into their brains is like trying to put sticky notes on their foreheads, but the sticky notes don't have enough glue on them. In this course, students learn to input and retrieve information so it sticks." In the course, students practice taking tests, memorizing material and improving their vocabulary skills. Students also improve their speaking, comprehension and writing skills by reading the novel "The Boys From Brazil" and comparing it to the movie. For more information about the course, contact Coffman at (765) 494-5110, sjcoffman@purdue.edu. Current and incoming Purdue students can register for the class through their academic advisers. Others should contact the Office of Admissions at (765) 494-1776 for fee and course information. The course number is GS290X.
