International Education Week to include variety of activities

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University will celebrate International Education Week this week (Nov. 12-16) with a variety of activities on campus and outreach efforts at local schools.

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. departments of State and Education designed to promote programs to help Americans learn more about other nations and cultures, encourage international education in local schools, and emphasize good global citizenship.

Throughout the week, Purdue international students representing a variety of countries will make visits to Burnett Creek Elementary School, Klondike Middle School and Central Catholic High School. The Purdue students will make presentations ranging from calligraphy demonstrations to cricket lessons.

On Wednesday (Nov. 14) Purdue international students representing Egypt, the Caribbean, Mauritius, India and France will be at Burnett Creek. In addition to presentations, students will show Egyptian artifacts and demonstrate cricket to students.

Purdue international students will visit 12 classes at Central Catholic on Thursday (Nov. 15) to discuss topics related to their home countries. Mexico, Spain, Russia, the Netherlands, China, South Korea, Germany, India and Thailand will be represented. A few of the presentations include a lesson about Chinese medicine to a health class, a presentation of Thai culinary habits to a home economics class, and the telling of Chinese and Korean native folk stories to English literature classes.

On Friday (Nov. 16) international students representing China, India, Japan, Germany, South Korea and the Dominican Republic will meet with students at Klondike Middle School. Students there will learn about Indian dance, Chinese and Indian music, Japanese and Chinese calligraphy, and German, Korean and Dominican cooking.

"We are very pleased to have three local schools invite Purdue students from abroad to speak about their homelands," said Beth Tucker, co-coordinator for programming and engagement in International Students and Scholars. "This will be an excellent cross-cultural learning experience for their students as well as for our international students and scholars. This is the ninth consecutive year of presentations at Burnett Creek. We are especially proud of our relationship with that school and pleased with their ongoing interest."

The Office of Study Abroad, in conjunction with various organizations across campus, is presenting activities as well.

Study Abroad 101, which the office organizes throughout the year, will take place at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday (Nov. 14 and 15) in the study abroad office located in Young Hall, Room 105. Study abroad staff will be on hand to discuss opportunities for study and internships, provide information on application procedures and answer other questions.

Conversation hours also will take place throughout the week for people interested in languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
