Appointments, honors and activities

Appointments and promotions:

- Bente Fein will serve as director of advancement and major gifts for the College of Science, effective Nov. 26. Fein has served the past three years as director of development for the biological sciences and statistics departments and actuarial science program. Prior to joining Purdue, she served as director of development for the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation in Indianapolis.

 

Campus activities:

- The Purdue Naval ROTC will hold the annual Navy and Marine Corps Birthday Ball at 6 p.m. Friday (Nov. 9) at the University Inn, 3001 Northwestern Ave. This year's event celebrates the 232nd birthday of the Navy and Marine Corps. The U.S. Navy was established on Oct. 13, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized the use of two armed vessels to search for ships supplying the British Army in America. The Marine Corps was created on Nov. 10, 1775, when the Continental Congress agreed to create two battalions. Approximately 400 Purdue midshipmen, Naval ROTC staff, military personnel, family members and guests celebrate the event locally each year.

 

Faculty and staff honors:

- The Krannert School of Management's Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management Research area tied for 10th place with Northwestern University in a research productivity ranking by Texas A&M University and the University of Florida. The joint study compiles publishing proficiency data of management departments in 62 of the most prominent research universities in North America from 2003-2006. The University of Florida was ranked No. 1 and Indiana University tied for No. 21 with the University of Washington.

- Janet Afary, an associate professor of history and women's studies, received the Keddie/Balzan Fellowship, which is awarded by the International Balzan Prize Foundation. This fellowship is awarded by invitation only and includes the opportunity to spend the 2008-2009 academic year at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles). Afary is known for her work in Iranian studies and she is past president of the International Society for Iranian Studies.

- The first runner-up 2007 Biennial Association for Humanist Sociology Book Award was received in October by Janet Afary, associate professor of history and women's studies, and Kevin B. Anderson, professor of political science, for their book "Foucault and the Iranian Revolution: Gender and the Seductions of Islamism." The book was published in 2005 by the University of Chicago Press.
