'Day in College' puts high school students in Purdue classes for a day

NEW ALBANY, Ind. - An estimated 20 students from schools in the Louisville, Ky., and southeastern Indiana area will experience their first day in college while still enrolled in high school.

The Purdue College of Technology at New Albany will hold its second annual "Day in College" program for high school juniors and seniors from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 9).

"This Purdue program encourages high school counselors and teachers to nominate college-bound students to get a sneak peek at college," said Andy Schaffer, director of the Purdue College of Technology at New Albany.

"It's a wonderful chance not only for Purdue to showcase what it offers, but also for students to get an up-close look at the world-class educational opportunities Purdue offers right in their community."

Schaffer said the program allows students to see the types of courses and degrees that Purdue offers in New Albany. Students and their parents will be able to attend overview classes in topics such as computer graphics and electrical, industrial and mechanical engineering technology, and organizational leadership. They also will be able to meet with all of Purdue's New Albany-based professors.

Participants also will have the opportunity to look at engines, electronics, computers and test equipment used in Purdue's New Albany laboratories.

Purdue in New Albany offers bachelor's degrees in computer graphics technology, electrical engineering technology, industrial technology, mechanical engineering technology, and organizational leadership and supervision.

Students from Borden, Charlestown, Christian Academy, Corydon, Eastern, New Albany, Our Lady of Providence, and Silver Creek high schools in Indiana will participate in this year's event, as well as students from Jeffersontown, Oldham County and St. Xavier high schools in Kentucky.
