Police seek information on library incident

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University Police are seeking information about a small noose-like object that was found late Sunday (Nov. 4) by an employee in a campus library.

The employee told officers that at about 11:30 p.m. she found the object in an isolated study area in the Humanities, Social Science and Education Library, located in Stewart Center. The object was hanging from a hole in a desk backboard.

According to a police report, the item appeared to be a string from a sweatshirt hood that was about 18 inches long. The string was tied in a seven-loop slipknot to fashion something resembling a noose.

"The noose was small and wasn't left in an area where it would have been generally visible," said Lt. Fred Davis. "Given the circumstances and the currently available evidence, it is not possible to interpret the intent of the individual who left this object in the library. At this time, we are not ruling out any possibilities and, as we continue our investigation, we would ask anyone with additional information to contact the department."

Anyone with information can call the Purdue Police Department at (765) 494-8221 or the anonymous crime tip line at (765) 496-3784.
