Liberal Arts celebrates Islamic culture in November

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's College of Liberal Arts is using a series of five events in November to highlight the various dimensions of Islamic culture.

"This program and series of events is an opportunity for the Purdue community and citizens of Lafayette and West Lafayette to learn more about a very rich culture that is not well understood by many westerners," said David Parrish, professor of visual and performing arts and organizer for the Public Square Forum.

"An Encounter with Islam: Religion & Culture" is sponsored by the Purdue Liberal Arts Community Engagement program, which is known as PLACE. All events are free and open to the public.

The events and dates for the Public Square Forum are:

* Nov. 5. 5 p.m. Pao Hall, Rueff Galleries. Parrish will present a gallery talk about the exhibit, "Sacred Spaces of Islam: Mosque Design and Related Arts." The exhibit runs Nov. 5-20.

* Nov. 7. 7 p.m. Pao Hall, Rueff Galleries. Yasemin Gencer, a graduate student in Central Eurasian studies at Indiana University, will present "Islamic Illuminated Manuscripts."

* Nov. 12. 7:30 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 206. Mourad Ouzzani, a Purdue research assistant professor at Discovery Park's Cyber Center, will present "The Religion of Islam: Its History, Beliefs and Daily Practice."

* Nov. 16. 7 p.m. Stewart Center, Fowler Hall. There will be a performance of folk dances from countries of the Middle East. The dance troupe is directed by Kat Lebo.

The Purdue Liberal Arts Community Engagement program started in January and is aimed at increasing its faculty's community engagement, as well as examining and solving social issues that affect citizens throughout the state. In October, Liberal Arts representatives presented "Migration, Immigration and Living in Diverse Communities" for community leaders, faculty and students. This Building Communities initiative had a number of students in communication, political science, English, and foreign languages and literatures classes studying various aspects of immigration and how it affects the community.
