Private-sector fundraising brings in $394 million for Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University announced Tuesday (Oct. 23) that private fundraising and non-government sponsored research and programs brought in nearly $394 million in the recently concluded fiscal year.

Of that amount, gifts to the university reached a record $320 million, making this the second time in Purdue history that net gift activity has surpassed the $300 million mark.

The Campaign for Purdue, the largest fundraising drive in the university's history, concluded on June 30 of this year.

University President France A. Córdova said the campaign moved Purdue into the spotlight throughout Indiana and the country.

"The generosity of our alumni, campus community, friends and corporate partners has been critical to Purdue's success with our just-completed strategic plan," Córdova said. "The university's facilities, programs and engagement efforts all improved because of their support. We are now working to craft our next plan, which will include an emphasis on student success and the student experience and require an emphasis on fundraising for scholarships and related programming."

Murray Blackwelder, senior vice president for advancement, said the fundraising success to date amounts to a vote of confidence for Purdue.

"The Campaign for Purdue reinforced that our alumni and friends believe in this university," Blackwelder said. "Our successes allowed us to raise our goal from $1.3 billion to $1.5 billion in 2004. In total, the campaign brought in $1.710 billion."

The $320 million raised during the fiscal year that ran from July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007, includes $95 million in net cash and equivalents, $36 million in gifts-in-kind and real estate, $7 million in irrevocable deferred gifts (at face value), and $183 million in new pledge commitments. Research grants from private-sector sources generated an additional $73 million.

On the gift volume front, the number of gifts received this past fiscal year total 108,191, which is 16 percent higher than the five-year annual average of 92,942 gifts.

Support from Purdue alumni and former students totaled nearly $80 million, corporations gave nearly $51 million, private foundations gave nearly $169 million, and friends and other organizations combined to give another $20 million.

"Purdue alumni are laying the foundation for successes in the future and changing the lives of Purdue students today," Blackwelder said.

The top gifts and pledges made during the 2007 fiscal year were:
