October 17, 2007 Six new ‘Friends of Extension’ named at conferenceWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service recognized six individuals for their commitment to Extension and community on Tuesday (Oct. 16). They were named ‘Friends of Extension’ during the annual conference banquet."The Friends of Extension award honors those people who have poured so much of their time and energy into serving others through Purdue Extension," said Randy Woodson, Glenn W. Sample Dean of Agriculture. "Their efforts in partnering with Purdue Extension enable us to provide a very strong outreach across the state." The honorees were: * Carolyn Davis, Covington, Ind. Davis has been the head of the Fountain County 4-H demonstration contest, served as exhibit hall chair and has been instrumental in recruiting and training leaders for these events. Each year, Davis organizes 4-H promotion and enrollment efforts for Covington elementary, middle and high-school students. She has worked outside the county by judging Indiana State Fair projects and served as Dean of Girls at 4-H Youth Round-Up. As an officer of the Indiana and American Vocational Association, she spoken in Washington, D.C. on behalf of education, Extension, family sciences and youth. * Dave and Lois Hensel, Morocco, Ind. After being hired as coordinator of the Step Ahead program for the Purdue Extension office in Newton County, Lois has served two three-year terms as Extension Board member and was a Purdue Council for Agricultural Research, Extension and Teaching member. The Hensels have been part of many consumer and family sciences, youth and community development programs in Newton County. These include helping to initiate Kindergarten Family Fun Night, contributing to the Celebrity Chef program and being fair superintendents of the Newton County Domestic Arts Building. Dave is an assistant 4-H sport-fishing leader, and both teach an after-school nutrition and cooking class called Kids in the Kitchen. * William Root, Sheridan, Ind. Root has served on the Hamilton County Extension Board and the 4-H Council for the past seven years and as the Hamilton County Extension Board president for three years. He has spent much time volunteering through PCARET and has served as the Area VI PCARET chairman and as the state PCARET president in 2005. Through PCARET, Root has facilitated many volunteer trips to Washington, D.C. to speak on behalf of Purdue Extension and research. He also has organized activities on communication with state legislators. Root has served as a co-chairman for the Hamilton County Farm Festival and assisted in festival activities while serving on the Hamilton County 4-H Centennial Celebration Committee. * Bob and Kay Tusing, Leesburg, Ind. The Tusings have been involved with Purdue Extension in Kosciusko County for more than 30 years and have served as 4-H dairy superintendents for 21 years. During their tenure, they set policies and rules, secured sponsors and assisted 4-H participants with animal health care for the 4-H Dairy Show. The Tusings also helped to develop a county lease program for dairy animals to give 4-H participants an opportunity to participate in a 4-H dairy project. Kay has served 12 years on the Kosciusko County 4-H Council, including serving as president, and is an active member of the 4-H Livestock Auction Committee.
