October 12, 2007 Purdue students blast off in rocket competition SundayWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Teams from Purdue's aeronautical and astronautical engineering rocket propulsion class will launch rockets made by students at 10:30 a.m. Sunday (Oct.14) in hopes of capturing the title "Rocketeer of the Year."Ivana Hrbud, assistant professor of aeronautical and astronautical engineering, said some 14 teams will launch their rockets at the Purdue Animal Research Farms near Tippecanoe County Road 600 North and U.S. 231. Students will use trajectory codes to predict altitude, time in the air and distance from the launch pad, and compare those predictions with actual flight performance. She said the team with smallest accumulated error between the predictions and actual flight will win the title. Hrbud said roughly 80 students are participating in the class, in which they build rockets and test them before the launch. The public is invited to view the competition. Hrbud said the event will be canceled if it rains. Writer: Clyde Hughes, (765) 494-2073, jchughes@purdue.edu Source: Ivana Hrbud, (765) 494-3423, ihrbud@purdue.edu
