Literary Reading Series brings poet to campus

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Poet Adam Zagajewski is speaking Oct. 18 as part of the Purdue University Literary Reading Series and Experience Liberal Arts.

His reading is at 7:30 p.m. at the Hicks Undergraduate Library Bookstall. The event, which is sponsored by the Creative Writing Program and the Department of English, is free and open to the public.

Zagajewski is the author of numerous books of poetry and prose, including "Without End: New and Selected Poems," "Another Beauty," "Mysticism for Beginners," "Two Cities" and the forthcoming "Eternal Enemies."

Born in Lvov, Ukraine, in 1945, Zagajewski first became well-known as one of the leading poets of the "Generation of '68" or the "Polish New Wave," said Porter Shreve, director of the Creative Writing Program and associate professor of English.

"Zagajewski is one of the most well-known and highly regarded contemporary Polish poets, it will be a great honor to hear his work in person," Shreve said.

Donald Platt, professor of English, said, "It was Adam Zagajewski's poem 'Try to Praise the Mutilated World' that the New Yorker printed in its special issue in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001. Like much of Zagajewski's work, that poem offers both a stunned appraisal of history and its terrors and also, most importantly, a consolation."

The New York Sun called Zagajewski "one of the most appealing and deeply civilized poets of our time." Among his honors are fellowships from the Berliner Kunstlerprogramm and the Guggenheim Foundation, the Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the Prix de la Liberté. He teaches at the University of Chicago.

Zagajewski's talk is part of October's Experience Liberal Arts, which will feature a variety of lectures, films, performances, events and exhibits that reflect the college's ongoing coursework and research in the arts, humanities, social and behavioral sciences.
