September 26, 2007 Search committee named to find candidates for next dean of educationWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University has formed a search committee to identify candidates for the dean's position in the College of Education.Dennis R. Depew, dean of the College of Technology, is chairing the committee. The committee will search for a successor to George W. Hynd, the dean of the College of Education and a professor of educational studies and psychological sciences. Hynd has been named senior vice provost for education and innovation, dean of the Mary Lou Fulton College of Education and Foundation Professor at Arizona State University, effective Jan. 1.Depew, who also chaired the dean search committee last year for the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences, said the search will be national and will include input from a wide variety of constituents, both around the university and in the community at large. "Purdue is so interconnected among disciplines, there is a need to involve the larger university community in the process of searching for any dean," said Purdue President France A. Córdova. "In this search, the committee will seek feedback from the local educational community and citizens, as well as the other deans, professors and students at Purdue. "We look forward to attracting a high-quality, diverse pool of applicants and using the input from everyone to find the best person for the position." Victor L. Lechtenberg, interim Purdue provost, said that he is confident the committee will identify strong candidates. "Education is a vitally important area, so it's important that we select a leader who will carry on the high standards set by George Hynd and continue to grow the college toward the future," Lechtenberg said. "Dean Depew is leading an excellent group of committee members who bring years of experience and a wide variety of expertise and viewpoints to the table that will be beneficial as we undertake this process." Committee members are: * Mark A. Balschweid, associate professor of youth development and agricultural education. * Kevin L. Brooks, doctoral candidate and instructor. * Lynn Bryan, associate professor of curriculum and instruction. * Wilella D. Burgess, managing director of the Discovery Learning Center. * Edward Eiler, superintendent of Lafayette School Corp. * Brian F. French, assistant professor of educational studies. * Kamyar Haghighi, department head of engineering education and professor of agricultural and biological engineering. * Kevin Kelly, department head and professor of educational studies. * William McInerney, professor of educational studies. * Teresa (T.J.) Oakes, assistant dean for teacher education and director of the Office of Professional Preparation and Licensure. * Luciana de Oliveira, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction. * Robert Rivers, dean of education, interim dean of management and professor of education at Purdue University Calumet. * Maribeth Cassidy Schmitt, Jean Adamson Stanley Professor of Literacy at Purdue. * John Staver, co-director of Purdue's Center for Research and Engagement in Science and Mathematics Education (CRESME) and professor of curriculum and instruction and chemistry. * Phillip VanFossen, James F. Ackerman Professor of Social Studies and director of the Ackerman Center for Democratic Citizenship. In the next few weeks, Depew plans to meet with members to formulate a position announcement, then will start reviewing candidates in late fall. He said once finalists have been chosen, they will be brought to campus for public forums so that students, professors, administrators and the public will have an opportunity to ask them questions. Before arriving at Purdue in 2003, Hynd was a distinguished research professor of special education and psychology and director of the Center for Clinical and Developmental Neuropsychology at the University of Georgia. Purdue's College of Education offers a bachelor's degree with majors in elementary education, social studies education and special education, as well as a variety of other teaching majors through various colleges. The college also offers master's and doctoral degrees through the departments of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Studies.
