Appointments and promotions:

—Jesica Webb has been appointed director of class gifts, effective Sept. 10. Webb previously worked in the College of Science as director of marketing and communications. Prior to that, Webb served as assistant director of marketing and communications for Purdue News Service.

—The College of Technology has named Duane D. Dunlap as associate dean for statewide technology. Dunlap oversees operations at Purdue's 10 College of Technology statewide locations, which serve the educational and work force training needs for 47 Indiana counties. Dunlap was assistant professor of industrial technology at Purdue from 1990-94, and also was an associate professor of both industrial technology and curriculum and instruction at Purdue. He was the founding director of the College of Technology's Weekend Master's Degree Program, directing the program from 1998-2001.

 

Campus activities:

— University Residences is partnering with the Indiana Blood Center for a monthlong blood drive. One donation session will be held at each residence hall beginning with McCutcheon Hall on Sept. 17, and Earhart Hall and Hilltop Apartments on Sept. 19. Staff and students can sign up at the front desk of any residence hall.

 

Faculty and staff honors:

— Two Purdue faculty members are among 83 of the nation's "brightest young engineers" to be selected to take part in the National Academy of Engineering's 13th annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium. The two-day event,  Sept. 24-26 in Redmond, Wash., will bring together engineers ages 30-45 who are performing exceptional engineering research and technical work in a variety of disciplines. Timothy Fisher, a professor of mechanical engineering, and Hugh W. Hillhouse, an associate professor of chemical engineering, were selected from Purdue. The participants - from industry, academia, and government - were nominated by fellow engineers or organizations and chosen from more than 260 applicants.

— Purdue Marketing Communications received the Betty M. Nelson Recognition Award for Outstanding Service to Purdue Retirees from the Purdue University Retirees Association. Dave Brannan, PMC director, accepted the award during the association's annual kickoff luncheon on Sept. 10. The Nelson Award was established by PURA to provide special recognition for individuals, departments and outside agencies that provide significant service to all Purdue retirees. The award is named in honor of Betty Nelson, dean of students emerita and former PURA president, as a reminder of her contributions to the organization and her unceasing efforts to have retirees maintain a vital role in the Purdue family.

 

Student honors:

—  John Blood, a doctoral student in the College of Technology, has been awarded a Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) fellowship from the Department of Defense. The SMART Scholarship for Service Program was established by the Department of Defense to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. Blood is a second-year doctoral student studying the issue of technology transfer. The sponsoring organization for the fellowship is the U.S. Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command in San Diego. Blood has been employed with the Department of Defense for the last seven years. He is the first Purdue student to receive the SMART scholarship.
