Purdue University communication students are producing a video newsmagazine that will air 12 shows this semester on a local cable channel.

"Fast Track" will air twice a week on Insight's Channel 5. The 30-minute show started Sept. 7 and will be shown through the semester each Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. One special edition of the show also will air nationally on the Big Ten Network, which is dedicated to covering the Big Ten Conference and its 11 member institutions. A date has not been scheduled for this episode.

Students in the newsmagazine production and video journalism combined class research and work on stories outside of class using the Department of Communication's equipment. Then, they produce and tape the newsmagazine during class in the department's studio in Stewart Center.

"This is a great opportunity for students to learn how to report and produce community news and entertainment," said Patricia Rochon, clinical assistant professor of communication. "Many of these students walk away with a reel of high-quality work that can help them find a job."

Students experience producing all aspects of the show, including on-air reporting, operating cameras and editing video, and they also have the opportunity to specialize in specific skills such as creating television graphics.

Local stories include regular features about Purdue research and professors, as well as sports, arts and entertainment. In addition to news segments, meteorology students from the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences also prepare and deliver weather-related reports.

Thanks to a partnership with CNN, students can use some of the network's footage to develop more in-depth stories, Rochon said.
