Panel to discuss international relations with Iraq, Iran

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A policy analyst and two Purdue University professors will participate in a Sept. 20 panel discussion on United States foreign policy in the Persian Gulf region.

"Iraq, Iran, Next?" panel, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Krannert Building's Krannert Auditorium. The event is co-sponsored by the Committee on Peace Studies and the Lafayette Area Peace Coalition.

The discussion will be led by Robert Naiman, a senior policy analyst for Just Foreign Policy, an organization aimed at reforming U.S. foreign policy. Janet Afary, associate professor of history at Purdue, and Aaron Hoffman, assistant professor of political science and a member of Peace studies at Purdue, also will be on the panel.

Panelists will discuss the current state of the United States relations with Iran and how these relations are shaped by the war in Iraq, as well as whether the United States should use force against Iran.

Naiman also is researcher, union organizer and teacher of economics and mathematics. He has worked and studied in the Middle East and produces the Just Foreign Policy news summary and podcast. Afary teaches and publishes books and articles on Iran and East Asia. Hoffman recently returned from a study tour of Israel and Palestine. His research focuses on international terrorism, and he has published a book on trust in international relations.

The Committee on Peace Studies, which is housed in the Department of Political Science, is an interdisciplinary committee of faculty from the English, history, philosophy and child development and family studies departments, and the Women's Studies program.  Purdue undergraduate students can earn a minor in peace studies. The committee also brings speakers to campus and organizes presentations on issues related to peace and justice.
