September 6, 2007 Indiana companies to find homegrown talent at high-tech fairWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
Employers can register online for the 10th annual High Tech Job Fair for Indiana Companies at www.purdue.edu/ jobfair. The event, offered by Purdue's Technical Assistance Program, will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union ballrooms. Company representatives can screen candidates during the fair, and then interview selected students from 4-8 p.m. The fair also will feature an information session with recruiting tips for high-tech businesses from 9:30-10:15 a.m. Students with prospective degrees in technology, science, engineering, management and agriculture will be matched with Indiana companies that have high-tech job openings. Sixty-seven companies from throughout the state attended the 2006 event. One graduate who found a job at the 2006 fair is Abhishek Mehra, an associate electronic engineer with Landis+Gyr Inc., a Lafayette, Ind. engineering and manufacturing firm that specializes in electricity revenue meters. Mehra, who attended Purdue University Calumet and earned a degree in electrical engineering, said he found the ideal position at the fair. "Finding a job in Lafayette gave me the opportunity to be close to Purdue," Mehra said. "I always wanted to pursue a master's degree at Purdue, and now I can do so while continuing to work at Landis+Gyr." Jerry Figurilli, Landis+Gyr chief operating officer, said his company participates in the job fair because of the high quality of graduates that Purdue provides for high-tech jobs. "We view Purdue University as a world-class institution that does an outstanding job of preparing their graduates to step into the work force and contribute immediately," Figurilli said. "Students and graduates come technically prepared and are knowledgeable about recent technological trends. They bring fresh ideas and approaches to the way we do business. We have asked some recently hired software and electrical engineers to step in and fill some big shoes, and they have performed admirably." Randy Hountz, Technical Assistance Program associate director, said the fair provides companies with a "one-stop shop" to find the right match for each open job, including full- and part-time positions. "TAP's job fair has strengthened Purdue's relationship with companies throughout Indiana by linking executives with hundreds of highly skilled students in a single event," Hountz said. "They return year after year because attending this fair is efficient and effective." The fair is sponsored by the Purdue's colleges of Agriculture, Science, Technology and Engineering, the Krannert School of Management, and Purdue's Center for Career Opportunities and is open to undergraduate and graduate students from all Purdue campuses. "We know companies have a variety of hiring needs, and this general fair provides access to students across our campus," Hountz said. "We are confident Purdue can supply top students for any high-tech job." Established in 1986, the Technical Assistance Program's mission is to help business, industry and government use new technologies to benefit Indiana citizens and improve the state economy. According to the program's 2007 annual report, Purdue faculty, staff and students have worked with more than 6,400 companies and hospitals to date. Their efforts have saved more than 4,000 jobs and accounted for more than $300 million in increased sales.
