Students receive awards from Purdue's Black Cultural Center
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A large number of students recently received awards from Purdue University's Black Cultural Center during an annual awards banquet.The students were recognized for their leadership and service to the Black Cultural Center through their work as members of the student staff or as voluntary members of the center's performing arts ensembles.
Throughout the school year, students studied St. Helena Island, S.C., one of the islands off the coast of South Carolina, Georgia and northern Florida that was the destination of Africans brought to the United States because of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
The students learned about the Gullah people who live on the island through experiential learning and exploration, and they prepared performing arts presentations based on the culture for the center's annual cultural arts festival.
