Purdue fraternities sanctioned for previous violations

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue officials, in conjunction with international fraternity offices, on Monday (Aug. 27) announced joint punitive measures for five fraternities that previously were temporarily suspended for violating the university's policies on alcohol and social functions at chapter houses.

The Office of the Dean of Students and the Interfraternity Council removed the chapters from temporary suspension but submitted a list of requirements they must fulfill, said Kyle Pendleton, Purdue's assistant dean of students. The five fraternities had been placed on temporary suspension pending the outcome of official assessments by the fraternities' international offices and Purdue.

The sanctions for the fraternities - Delta Upsilon, Kappa Delta Rho, Phi Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Alpha Epsilon - include attending mandatory alcohol awareness workshops, co-sponsoring alcohol education programming, updating their risk awareness programs and completing other directives of their international offices.

"These decisions take into consideration the cooperation of the chapter members and their diligent work to address these incidents," Pendleton said. "If the chapters have any further violations of university or Interfraternity Council policies during the academic year, they will be subject to additional sanctions that include additional probationary sanctions or full suspension."

Requirements for Delta Upsilon, 1300 Stadium Ave., include:

* Completing the CHOICES alcohol and substance abuse prevention program.

* Co-sponsoring programming by Lori Hart Ebert, a speaker who will lead an all-fraternity workshop addressing high-risk drinking on campus.

* Updating a copy of the chapter's risk awareness program by Sept. 30.

* Completing other directives of their international fraternity office.

* Completing the CHOICES alcohol and substance abuse prevention program.

* Co-sponsoring programming by Hart Ebert.

* Updating a copy of the chapter's risk awareness program by Sept. 30.

* Completing other directives of their international fraternity office.

Requirements for Pi Kappa Alpha, 629 University Ave., include:

* Having a 75 percent chapter participation in the CHOICES alcohol and substance abuse prevention program.

* Co-sponsoring programming by Hart Ebert.

* Updating a copy of the chapter's risk awareness program by Sept. 30.

* Completing other directives of their international fraternity office no later than Dec. 31.

Requirements for Sigma Alpha Epsilon, 406 Littleton Ave., include:

Pendleton said the fraternities held events during Boiler Gold Rush that were not properly registered with the university at which minors were served or possessed alcohol.
