Gas leak closes section of State Street

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University police are  rerouting traffic on State Street, between Russell and University streets, while Vectren crews look for the source of a gas leak.

A pedestrian smelled the gas coming from a sewer cover and alerted authorities, said Kevin Ply, Purdue interim fire chief. Emergency crews were dispatched shortly after 6 p.m. While gas was detected in that immediate area, none was detected in nearby  buildings or  tunnels. No buildings were evacuated.

In an attempt to locate the source of the gas, Vectren crews Thursday night were drilling holes in the asphalt.
