August 16, 2007 Two Purdue fraternities suspended following violationsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue officials on Wednesday (Aug. 15) announced that two fraternities have been suspended pending a response from their international chapters and possible appeal for violating the university's policy regarding alcohol and social functions at chapter houses. In unrelated incidents, Delta Upsilon, 1300 Stadium Ave., and Phi Kappa Psi, 359 Northwestern Ave., were suspended after the fraternities held functions this week at which minors were given or possessed alcohol, according to the Office of the Dean of Students. Delta Upsilon's social function was on Monday (Aug. 13), and Phi Kappa Psi held similar events on Monday and Tuesday (Aug. 13 and 14). Both fraternities also were found to have violated the regulations of the Interfraternity Council, the student-run governing and program body for Purdue fraternities, which state that no chapters are allowed to hold events involving alcohol during recruitment or Boiler Gold Rush, a weeklong orientation program for first-year students. The fraternities also violated an Interfraternity Council regulation that requires the chapters to register social functions to the IFC, said Kyle Pendleton, assistant dean of students. Both fraternities have been placed on suspension pending the outcome of official chapter assessments by the fraternities' international offices, which will submit a report to the Office of the Dean of Students and the Interfraternity Council. The chapters must complete all university- and international office-recommended sanctions. If the chapters disagree with the findings, they can request a formal university hearing, Pendleton said. During the suspension, both fraternities must cease all chapter operations other than meetings coordinated by their executive offices or appointed review committees.
