Purdue's vet school to demonstrate expertise at Indiana State Fair

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Veterinarians from Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine will demonstrate spay and neuter surgeries and other procedures Aug. 8-19 at the Indiana State Fair.

A surgical team consisting of licensed veterinarians from throughout Indiana and from Purdue, assisted by surgical staff and students from Purdue, will perform the spay and neuter surgeries at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily. These demonstrations have been a popular attraction in the Pioneer Our Land Pavilion for 23 years.

On Purdue Day, at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. p.m. Aug. 15, Purdue veterinarians Lynetta Freeman and Amy Fauber will perform a live public demonstration of a laparoscopic spay surgery on a dog. Freeman is an expert on minimally invasive animal surgery.

Other non-surgical presentations with live animals include:

* 2 p.m. Aug. 8 and 2:30 p.m. Aug. 10: "The Fantastic Voyage into the Digestive System" will feature a veterinarian performing an equine gastroscopy and will show live video of the internal digestive system of a horse.

* 2 p.m. Aug. 11: "Safe Milk from Healthy Cows," presented by Simon Kenyon, associate professor of veterinary clinical science.

* 2 p.m. Aug. 13: "Unique Dog Breeds," presented by Sara Sharp, a veterinary technician from Purdue's Small Animal Community Practice.

* 2 p.m. Aug. 18: Diane Bevier, an expert in dermatology and associate professor of veterinary clinical science, will demonstrate dermatological care for pets.

The Indiana State Fairgrounds are located at 1202 E. 38th St., Indianapolis.
