May 2, 2007 Canoe teams prove that concrete can floatPurdue's chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers was the host to nearly 500 engineering students from throughout the Great Lakes region for two days of engineering skills contest on April 26-27.A dozen universities entered the concrete canoe races held on a pond northeast of campus. Men, women and coed teams competed in both sprint and endurance slalom competitions. The University of Wisconsin, national champions four years running, claimed a fifth consecutive regional title. Teams from the University of Illinois and Evansville University placed second and third. The hosting team, Purdue, placed fifth among women and sixth among men.
