Purdue faculty member receives highest honor bestowed by engineering organization

Salvendy will receive the award on May 7 in Washington, D.C., for his "fundamental, international and seminal leadership and technical contributions to human engineering and industrial engineering education, theory and practice."
"Gavriel is the first individual from Purdue to receive this award, and he is well-deserving of such a recognition," said Nagabhushana Prabhu, the James J. Solberg Head of the School of Industrial Engineering. "His contributions and research to the discipline of industrial engineering and his research in human factors and ergonomics have been adopted in countries around the world."
The award, which was established in honor of John Fritz in 1902, is referred to as the highest award in the engineering profession. Past recipients include Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Alfred Nobel and Orville Wright.
The American Association of Engineering Societies is a multidisciplinary organization of engineering societies dedicated to advancing the knowledge, understanding and practice of engineering. Members represent engineers in industry, government and academia.
Salvendy's areas of research involve human factors and ergonomics. The field concerns the design, operation and management of work environments in industries, including information technology, automotive, aircraft, communication and consumer products, as well as in service-sector organizations. It became a field of study during World War II as engineers changed aircraft cockpit designs to better fit pilots.
Salvendy is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He also is the founding editor of two scientific journals: the International Journal on Human-Computer Interaction and Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing.
