April 18, 2007 All-day study lounge, coffee shop openWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's newly renovated 24-hour study lounge and Undergrounds, its new coffee shop, has opened in the John W. Hicks Undergraduate Library.The space celebrated its grand opening on Friday (April 13) by giving out free coffee samples and door prizes to students and staff. Renovation of the 24-hour student lounge began last fall. Before the remodeling, the lounge was a simple study space with chairs, tables and a vending machine. Today it features a contemporary design, an updated seating area and the coffee shop, which serves Seattle's Best coffee products and various foods selections. Undergrounds was the name chosen through a campuswide naming contest for students. Nearly 800 students, who could submit up to three potential names for the coffee shop, offered some 1,900 suggestions. The winning name was submitted by 31 students; Tiffani Harris, a senior majoring in graphics design, was chosen as the winner in a random drawing.
