Purdue police investigate bottle bomb incident
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue police are looking for individuals who set off a homemade incendiary device around 11:45 p.m. Sunday (April 1) outside near Hilltop Apartments Building 6 on Ross Ade Drive.A Hilltop Apartments staff resident called police after hearing an explosion and seeing smoke coming from the vicinity of building 6. No one was injured.
Lt. Fred Davis said Purdue police officers found two bottles containing a fizzing liquid on the south side of the building. Police found the remnants of another bottle on the west side that appeared to have exploded and still contained a white residue.
Members of the Purdue Fire Department arrived to run tests and neutralize the contents of the remaining two bottles.
"Any time there is a chance that someone could be struck by a caustic substance, there is a concern for public safety," Davis said. "The substances used to construct these explosive devices could cause serious bodily injury or property damage."
Possessing, manufacturing, transporting or distributing a destructive device is a Class C felony punishable by up to eight years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000.
