Purdue summer interns ready for real-world experience

Employers can begin the summer intern recruiting process by registering on the program's Web site at https://www.tap.purdue.edu/ or by contacting Sheana Reigle, summer intern coordinator, at (765) 494-3314. After registering, employers will receive resumes from qualified students. Purdue staff will assist in scheduling students for interviews through April 27.
Since the number of available students decreases as the semester progresses, Technical Assistance Program associate director Randy Hountz recommends employers contact his staff as soon as possible.
"Employers who get their intern positions posted and interviews completed early have the greatest opportunity to find an ideal candidate," Hountz said.
Interns will be available for work at the conclusion of the spring semester on May 7 and can work through Aug. 17. Students and employers negotiate salaries and the duration of the internship.
Because of their diverse areas of expertise, students can help in areas such as product development, computer-aided design, Web site development, plant layout, software selection, construction inspection and surveying, computer programming, and production process improvement.
"Short-term projects that might otherwise not be completed are ideal for summer interns," Hountz said. "Interns also can provide a unique perspective that can help companies save time and money. Some employers have found that hiring interns is a great way to find and retain full-time employees in tight job markets like we have now."
Last summer, Laura Lewandowski, a junior in industrial management from Bristol, Ind.; Kevin Slater, a senior majoring in consumer and family science from Elkhart, Ind.; and Rob Felton, a junior majoring in accounting and finance from Chesterton, Ind., served as interns at Godfrey Marine, a boat manufacturer in Elkhart, Ind.
Roxanne Lutz, Godfrey Marine marketing manager, said her company plans on hiring more interns from Purdue.
"We gain fresh perspectives and new ideas from energetic individuals such as Laura, Kevin and Rob who have computer fluency and a desire to learn on the job," Lutz said. "Students from Purdue possess solid organizational abilities, communication skills and a professional, resourceful attitude. Godfrey Marine looks forward to working with Purdue to obtain additional students for our next summer internship program as well as graduates for available career positions."
Since 1988 more than 900 undergraduate and graduate engineering, technology and management students have worked for approximately 500 Hoosier employers through the summer intern program. The program also provides access to Purdue's faculty expertise for both students and employers.
In addition to providing interns, the Technical Assistance Program provides Indiana businesses with year-round technical assistance and information.
