Purdue names new associate dean for engineering

"Mike Harris is a superb researcher, educator and mentor," Jamieson said. "He will provide the necessary leadership to continue the progress that Purdue's College of Engineering has achieved in its engagement activities, curriculum changes, increased student diversity and other ongoing initiatives."
In his new position, Harris will oversee projects that include accreditation, undergraduate engineering programs such as Engineering Projects in Community Service, the Indiana Space Grant Consortium, and minority engineering and women in engineering. He also will be responsible for the Office of Professional Practice and special initiatives such as the Engineering Curriculum Reform Task Force.
Harris joined Purdue in 2002 as a professor and was previously an associate professor at the University of Maryland. He earned his bachelor's degree in science from Mississippi State University in 1981 and his master's and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1987 and 1992, respectively.
Harris received the 2005 AIChE Minority Affairs Committee Grimes Award for Excellence in Chemical Engineering. He also has received awards from the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and a National Science Foundation Career Award.
At Purdue he chaired the Graduate Student Recruiting Committee in chemical engineering for several years. In 2006 he received the Purdue College of Engineering Outstanding Advisor Award. In 2003 he was named a Purdue University Faculty Scholar. He was appointed associate editor of the Journal of Nanomaterials in 2005.
