Grand Prix

Did You Know?:
Purdue Grand Prix

"The Greatest Spectacle in College Racing" began as a dream for a group of Purdue students, who were looking for an event to allow engineering students to showcase their skills and enthusiasm. That dream became a reality on May 17, 1958, with the running of the first Purdue Grand Prix. The first kart race was run on a field and adjacent parking lot near the Recreational Gymnasium. The first karts were built from scratch and featured lawnmower engines. They could barely exceed 30 miles per hour. After 144 laps, James Moneyhun of Gable Courts won the first Grand Prix.

National Security Garden

National Security Garden
installed near Elliott Hall

Professors Shannon McMullen and Fabian Winkler have worked with 17 students from Purdue's Honors College to create the National Security Garden, located on the southeast side of Elliott Hall. The art installation is a 16-by-12-foot planter box filled with rows of edamame soybeans. A solar tower next to the box collects power for the magenta-colored lights, composed of red and blue LEDs, which are sometimes used to stimulate growth in greenhouses.

The project's combination of nature and technology are meant to challenge all who visit the garden to consider just how many contemporary issues are linked to the soybean plant, McMullen says. Soybeans are used to make innovative products, but they are also part of a global discussion about resource use, climate change and worldwide food supplies. A story and photo gallery on the project can be found in the College of Liberal Arts' THiNK magazine.
