Professor Bernie Tao suspected soy biodiesel was good for more than just powering cars and trucks. In his quest to identify new biodiesel uses, Tao began comparing notes with friend and Purdue civil engineer Jason Weiss. Some six years later, the two have developed a repellent that greatly reduces the ability of water and other compounds to penetrate concrete and cause cracking and chipping under winter freeze-thaw conditions.
The project is one example of how Purdue Agriculture teams up with companies, organizations, foundations and government agencies to tackle public problems on everything from crop science to consumer behavior. Purdue Agricultures Magazine delves into these collaborations here.

Purdue sports
The Big Ten Conference honored 620 student-athletes on Wednesday (March 27), naming them to the 2013 winter Academic All-Big Ten team. The Boilermakers accounted for 47 names on that list, including 25 members of the Purdue women's swimming and diving team.
Eight members of Purdue men's swimming and diving will represent the Boilermakers today through Saturday (March 28-30) at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis.
Purdue Athletics has debuted Purdue Football 212°, a weekly video production that will take a behind-the-scenes look at the Boilermakers. The inaugural episode features the team's 6 a.m. conditioning workouts that took place in February and March.
