Purdue Society of Professional Engineers wins Rube for fourth year in a row

Society of Professional Engineers
The Purdue Society of Professional Engineers scored its fourth consecutive first-place finish Saturday (Feb. 23) in the 26th annual regional Rube Goldberg Machine Contest by making a hamburger in the most inefficient way possible.

The team accomplished the task in 101 steps. For the third year in a row, they also won the People's Choice Award, voted on by the approximately 1,500 audience members. More

Purdue to heighten presence at Chamber Business Expo

Purdue is enhancing its presence at the Lafayette-West Lafayette 2008 Chamber Business Expo, which will take place Feb. 27 at University Plaza Hotel.

"Different areas of the university have had exhibits over the years," said Mike Piggott, director of community relations and visitor information at Purdue. "The idea is to get everybody together in one booth and make a big presence." More

Purdue police investigate reported assault

Purdue police are investigating a report of an assault that occurred Saturday (Feb. 23) on campus.

A woman reported the alleged incident to police at about 2:15 a.m. She said she was walking from Owen Residence Hall and a man followed her for a distance before stopping her at the northwest corner of Northwestern and Stadium avenues and asking her for directions. More

Appointments and promotions

-- Krannert School of Management's doctoral program in economics ranked 31st among the top 58 world departments and 25th among departments in U.S. colleges and universities in a review by faculty at the University of Arizona and Warsaw School of Economics.
-- Gary Bertoline, assistant dean for graduate studies in the College of Technology and professor of computer graphics technology and computer and information technology, authored the fourth edition of "Technical Graphics Communications," published this year by McGraw Hill.
-- Janet Ayres, Extension specialist in leadership development in the College of Agriculture and professor of agricultural economics received the Friend of Conservation Award.
-- Kathy Banks, civil engineering department head, Adriela Fernandez, associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts, Laura Glitz, women's tennis head coach, Veronica Hirsch, director of the Native American Educational and Cultural Center, Dorothy Reed, assistant provost and Pamella Shaw, assistant provost, were honored Feb. 21 at the eighth annual Mortar Board Women of Purdue Reception.
-- John Weaver, facility manager at the Birck Nanotechnology Center in Purdue's Discovery Park, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology.
