Apollo capsule makes a journey to new space

Workers move a full-scale replica of the Apollo 1 command module into place inside the atrium of Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering on Wednesday (Oct. 17). The capsule, on loan from the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson, Kan., will be on display during the hall's official dedication on Oct. 27. In 1967 two of the Apollo 1 astronauts, Purdue graduates Virgil "Gus" Grissom and Roger Chaffee, died in a fire during a launch pad training exercise in the capsule. More

Purdue Galleries joins Department of Visual and Performing Arts

Beginning this semester, Purdue Galleries has joined the Patti and Rusty Rueff Department of Visual and Performing Arts. Krannert students to collect food for homeless shelter

A student organization from Krannert School of Management will distribute bags to houses around the University Farm subdivision beginning Monday (Oct. 22) for food donations that will be given to a local homeless shelter. More

Sears Lecture Series begins with former CIA director

A former director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency is the first of four speakers in the Sears Lecture Series.R. James Woolsey will present "Energy, Security and the Long War of the 21st Century" at 8 p.m. Nov. 12 in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. The title for this year's Sears Lecture Series is "U.S. Security in an Insecure World." All talks are free and open to the public. More

Plant pathologist earns distinction of Sharvelle Award

Daniel Egel, a Purdue Cooperative Extension Service plant pathologist, received the 2007 Eric G. Sharvelle Distinguished Extension Specialist Award. Egel was honored Tuesday (Oct. 16) during the annual Purdue Extension Development Conference banquet for his research in melon diseases and his outreach with the Melon Disease Forecaster, or Melcast. Consortium to teach about omega-3

A new consortium aimed at educating the public about omega-3s will be lead by Bruce Watkins, professor of food science. The International Omega-3 Learning and Education Consortium for Health and Medicine is funded through a grant from the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s. More

Prof: Young toddlers think in terms of the whole object, not just parts

Seeing through a child's eyes can help parents better introduce new words to young toddlers, according to research from Purdue.

"This new research shows that as young toddlers learn language, they are more likely to focus on objects rather than parts," said George Hollich, an assistant professor of psychological sciences. "Because of this bias, children automatically assume you are talking about an object. So, when labeling more than just an object, adults need to do something special such as pointing at the part while saying its word or explaining what the item does." More
