Utilizing Digital Twin applications in Facility Condition Assessment DUIRI - Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship Fall 2023 Accepted Construction Management, Facilities Management, Building Information Modeling, Facility Condition Assessment, Digital Twin, Fuzzy Inference Systems Digital twin is often referred to as a realistic digital replica of any asset. Depending on the level and details of the digital twin, it comprises real-time data and analytics that would be utilized to identify any potential issues in building systems and components. Considering the increasing attention and applications of digital twins in the architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO) industry, this project aims to identify the potential use of digital twins in the facility condition assessment (FCA) process. FCA is a fundamental practice in facilities management that provides a comprehensive understanding of buildings and their systems as a snapshot. The common steps of FCA require visual inspections and walk-through surveys, which are resource intensive. In light of these, the project will first focus on the current literature to reveal the use of digital twin technology and other advanced technologies in AECO and FCA. Following the literature review, a set of interviews with industry professionals will be conducted to gather industry views on utilizing digital twins and facility condition assessment. Students will experience CITI training and the IRB process for the interview phase. The project is a collaborative effort between Dr. Deniz Besiktepe from the School of Construction Management Technology at the Polytechnic Institute and Dr. Sogand Hasanzadeh Lyles School of Civil Engineering in the College of Engineering. Deniz Besiktepe Literature review and interviews N/A o Min 3.00 GPA o Basic Building Information Modeling (BIM) knowledge o Basic building systems knowledge o Junior or senior year students of CMT, CEM, CE, CGT, or BIM programs 0 10 (estimated)
