The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, and Aquatic Attraction Lifeguarding courses.

The Lifeguard Instructor course incorporates online and classroom components that focus on knowledge, administration, teaching, and evaluating skills for success in teaching the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training class.

This class is a blended learning class and requires a swim skills test as well as both online and on-site learning sessions. Registered participants will be sent instructions to access online learning portal to the email account on file prior to class start date.

Participants must complete required swim skills testing and on-line training components to be eligible for on-site skills sessions. Students must attend and complete in full all scheduled course sessions and activities in order to receive certification.

Lifeguard Instructor Certification Requirements:

  • Be at least 17 years of age

  • Possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate or equivalent.

  • Pass swim skills evaluation (requirements listed below)

  • Complete online blended learning course module for Orientation to the American Red Cross and Orientation to the Lifeguarding Program, which includes a Pre-course Exam. Must complete online section prior to start of class date to be eligible for in-class participation. Failure to complete on-line exam prior to first class session will result in student being dropped from course without refund.

  • Blended learning portion of class will be emailed to participants one week prior to the beginning of class

  • Attend and participate in all course sessions, as scheduled, in their entirety

  • Complete all teaching assignments and pass written final exam
