'Boiler Bytes 15' coming Wednesday on BTN

November 23, 2010

A new installment of a Purdue television program featuring Purdue people and programs will premiere Wednesday (Nov. 24) on the Big Ten Network.

"Boiler Bytes 15," a 30-minute video news magazine produced by Purdue, will debut at noon on BTN. Another look at "Purdue Profiles: Orville Redenbacher" will follow at 12:30 p.m. The programs are scheduled for repeat showings at 3 and 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

A week later, on Dec. 1 and 2, "Boiler Bytes 15" will be shown again at the same hours, but followed each of those times by "The Boilermakers: World Food Prize Laureates." The BoilerMakers format offers topics in depth.

"Boiler Bytes 15" has five featured segments on these topics:

* Purdue's annual Space Day, which bring children grades 3-8 to campus for hands-on learning about the nature and value of space exploration, concentrating on the STEM disciplines. This year, students tried to devise soft landings for eggs, made and launched water rockets, and heard from alumnus astronaut David Wolf.

* Science Express, which lends modern research equipment to Indiana high schools for periods of one or two weeks. Sponsored by the departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry, the program lets high school teachers select an area of interest, receive summertime training on the equipment, schedule online and use Purdue people as consultants during the loan. High schoolers then get to perform experiments that wouldn't be possible otherwise.

* Mixable, a Purdue innovation from ITaP for online study groups and coursework organization. From most any location, Purdue students can log in. They can use Mixable as an application or tie-in with Facebook, Twitter or Dropbox so they'll know quickly when a group member updates something.

• Sports head injuries, about which an interdisciplinary Purdue team of researchers has made startling discoveries -- brain function problems, at least short-term, occur commonly among football players without concussion or symptoms. Three types of testing have revealed this phenomenon.

* Friday Night Fashion, a benefit for the Purdue Center for Cancer Research. Conducted on Homecoming weekend, the event featured models who are cancer survivors, Purdue professors or other interested people, as well as a silent auction for collectibles. Purdue quarterback great Jim Everett signed autographs.

"Boiler Bytes" installments also provide a chance to check on promotional spots for Purdue, Purdue Research Park and the Purdue Alumni Association.
