H27 Discussion – Su25

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Hints and Discussion Thread

  1. σave and R represent the location of the center and the radius of Mohr’s circle in the σ-τ plane. Use the equations provided in the lecture book for these two parameters.
  2. Be as neat as possible in drawing your Mohr’s circle to make sure that your circle is round.
  3. The x-axis on Mohr’s circle corresponds to (σ,τ) = (σxxy). Recall that the positive τ-axis points DOWNWARD.
  4. What are the two  extreme values for normal stress in your Mohr’s circle? These are called the principal stresses.
  5. What are the two extreme values for shear stress in your Mohr’s circle?
  6. Review the discussion in the lecture book on the origins of the two out-of-plane stress element rotations, and their influence in finding the absolute maximum shear stress.
