H13 Discussion – Su25

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Hints and Discussion Thread

  • Recall that dV/dx = p = line load. Therefore, the shear force V is the integral of the line load.
  • Recall that dM/dx = V . Therefore, the bending moment M is the integral of the shear force. Also, for locations along the beam for which V = 0, the bending moment has a relative maximum/minimum at that position along the beam.
  • For a concentrated load acting on the beam (either an applied load or a reaction force) there is a jump in the shear force at the location of that load. If the concentrated load is upward, the jump is upward; if the concentrated load is downward, the jump is downward.
