Hints and Discussion Thread

Equilibrium
- Draw individual FBDs of gears B and C.
- Assume positive torques in both members (1) and (2).
- You may want to review the positive sign conventions for torques in Chapter 8 of the lecture book.
- Note that gears do not transmit torques – they transmit forces. You may want to review Example 8.4 in the lecture book as you draw your FBDs.
- Write down the equilibrium equations for B and C. Is this problem determinate?
- Solve for the torques in the two shaft components.
Stress
Recall the shear stress equation for a shaft in torsion. Note that this equation shows a linear variation of shear stress with radial position in the cross-section.
