News for faculty and staff

April 3, 2008

In the spotlight:

Purdue Presidential Inauguration

France A. Córdova became Purdue's 11th president on July 16, 2007, and will be formally inaugurated April 11 in Elliott Hall of Music. Leading up to the inauguration, Purdue Today will take a look at Purdue's past leaders. Today, our fifth president, Winthrop Stone.

Presidents of Purdue's past:
Winthrop E. Stone, 1900-1921

After he served as the University's first vice president, the Purdue Board of Trustees named him the University's fifth president. Stone came to Purdue as a professor of chemistry. He appointed Purdue's first dean of women, Carolyn E. Shoemaker, in 1913. The schools of Agriculture and Engineering grew rapidly during his tenure, which ended tragically when he was killed in a mountain-climbing accident in Canada in 1921.
