Purdue Presidential Inauguration

France A. Córdova became Purdue's 11th president on July 16, 2007, and will be formally inaugurated April 11 in Elliott Hall of Music. Leading up to the inauguration, Purdue Today will take a look at Purdue's past leaders. Today, our fourth president, James Smart.

Presidents of Purdue's past:
James H. Smart, 1883-1900


Purdue's fourth president, James H. Smart, was a self-educated New Englander. Smart is known in Purdue history as "the engineers' president." The schools of civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, as well as the school of pharmacy and pharmacal sciences, were established during his tenure. It was during his administration that Old Gold and Black were established as the school colors.

Engineers make first 'active matrix' display using nanowires

Engineers have created the first "active matrix" display using a new class of transparent transistors and circuits, a step toward realizing applications such as e-paper, flexible color monitors and "heads-up" displays in car windshields.
