Space & Policies

Textbooks

Course-required texts may be on reserve or in reference. Items that are on reserve are available for 2-hour loans during the hours that the library is open. Libraries-wide policy is that we no longer offer overnight loans for reserve items. E-books and e-journals can be located using the Libraries’ catalog at www.lib.purdue.edu

During the regular fall and spring semesters, our library hours are:

Monday- Thursday: 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Saturday: 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Sunday: 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

For students who wish to have access to the material beyond the 2-hour loan period, while they have the material checked out, they can scan material for free in our Copy/Scanner room and email it to themselves or save it to a flash drive. If emailed, it will be sent in .pdf form and if students prefer to print this material, they can do so by using their print quota from any Purdue IT computer lab and print release station throughout campus. If students prefer to copy the material without scanning, there is a fee; details are available on our website https://www.lib.purdue.edu/services/print.

Closing Procedures

For security purposes, library staff are required to clear the library of all patrons and personal belongings at closing time. This is to verify that after-hours privileges are limited to those students with approved card-swipe permissions. Veterinary medical student cooperation with this procedure is much appreciated! At this same time, library staff will collect library materials from tables and carrels to ensure that all materials are checked in properly and secured.

Fifteen minutes after the library is closed and library staff have departed, students with card-swipe privileges can re-enter the library. Each person needs to swipe in individually. After-hours library access is a privilege offered by the Libraries exclusively to veterinary medical students. Students outside the veterinary medical program (and all Purdue students) can access the Hicks Undergraduate Library 24/7 with their student ID.

Renovated Spaces

Our newly renovated spaces are designed to allow students more collaborative group space, while still respecting the desire for quiet, solitary study.  Ample electrical outlets are provided along the walls and in the carrels. For safety, we ask that students not drape their power cords across walkways in any of the library spaces.

The individual study carrels have all been moved into the area that is enclosed by glass walls and doors. This area is for quiet study. Electrical outlets are available in the carrels.

Adjacent, yet separated by the glass walls and doors, is a soft-seating area that is intended for quiet study. Seating offers single or paired groupings with adequate electrical outlets along the walls. Feel free to move furniture or chairs to meet your comfort and charging needs!

The largest space is now filled with tables and chairs and is intended to be collaborative, group study space where conversational-level discussion is allowed and encouraged. Ample electrical outlets line the walls of this space.

Along the far wall of the largest space are four group study rooms that are available by reservation for those preferring privacy for their group work.

In the copier/scanner room, charging lockers are available that students can use to charge their laptops, netbooks, phones, etc. using either a standard outlet or USB plug. These lockers are secured with a digital PIN code.

Also in the copier/scanner room is a hot water tap that provides 180° hot water for beverages.

We do request that students clean up after themselves and trash and recycle bins are provided throughout the library for this purpose.
