Clinical Mentorship Information

Using the basic information supplied in the pre-requisite courses as well as skills developed working with a veterinarian, each of the Clinical Mentorships is designed to allow the student to document acquisition of technical skills to the level required by Purdue University's Veterinary Nursing Program.

Students will typically document most of the required technical skill tasks at the veterinary facility in which they are employed or with whom they have developed a volunteer or working relationship. The veterinary facility is required to meet certain basic requirements as they relate to available equipment and supplies. These are described in the Logbook for each Clinical Mentorship (click on mentorships below to see the Logbook as well as contracts and other materials). It is expected that more than one veterinary facility will need to be utilized to document required acquisition of technicial skills in all of the different species.

The type of required documentation is described in detail in the Logbooks and may include video taping, submission of materials produced, or other objective documentation that will be reviewed by Purdue University instructors.

Mentorships may be done at any point in the program, providing the student has completed the prerequisite coursework for the mentorship. With instructor permission, some mentorships may be taken concurrently with a prerequisite course. Prerequisites are listed in the Course Catalog under each individual mentorship.

Video Camera Recommendations:

Videos may be any format providing they can be downloaded to a computer and submitted appropriately.  Video should be submitted by one of the following methods:

  1. in the Media Gallery of Blackboard.  This is the preferred method of submission, since it does not limit how much is put on, is no cost to the student, and automatically archives.
  2. by an online source such as Dropbox.  If a password is required to open videos submitted with an online service, the password must be provided by the student. These methods may not be acceptable if they cannot be archived.
  3. by sending on a DVD or flash drive by regular mail to the address below.

Beginning for the fall 2019 semester:

  1. Payment by check, for the Professional Liability Insurance, will no longer be required.  The fee will now be billed through the Bursar's Office allowing you to pay for it the same way you pay your tuition.
  2. VM 22300 Pharmacy Procedures mentorship will be a test for using DocuSign for mentorship documents. DocuSign documents will only be available for VM 22300.
  3. Links for printing all other mentorship documents are available below.

If you submitted a fall 2019 course request form listing VM 22300, you will receive an email from the VNDL office providing links and instructions to the VM 22300 DocuSign forms. If you have not yet received an email from the VNDL office, please contact us at or 765-496-6579.

Mentorship registration for courses will be delayed until all mentorship paperwork is received, verified and processed at Purdue. Contracts should be completed, signed and submitted as early as possible to allow time for processing and permission to register before the semester begins.  Important information is sent to mentorship students before/at the beginning of each semester, and will not be sent until the student is registered in the course.

Failure to submit all required materials to the Veterinary Nursing office by 5:00 p.m. ET the Monday before classes begin will prevent a student from registering for the mentorship in that semester. The due date for Spring mentorship paperwork may be significantly earlier due to Purdue Winter Recess.

The following links will take you to the text of the Code of Conduct, Health Risk and Insurance Acknowledgment, Release of Liability, and Technical Standards.  The links below are NOT the actual agreements that you and/or your mentor will need to sign and date and submit to the Veterinary Nursing Office.  You can find the actual agreements within each separate clinical mentorship course link above.
