Intercultural Pathology Program in Tokyo, Japan

Veterinary students complete their pathology coursework in the second year of the professional curriculum, however, this experience will be open to all veterinary students and pathology graduate students in the College of Veterinary Medicine. This experience will fully immerse students in necropsy techniques, identification of gross lesions, preparation and evaluation of histologic specimens in academic, industrial, government, and zoological settings. Dr. Tiffany Lyle, Assistant Professor of Anatomic Pathology and board certified veterinary pathologist, will serve as the faculty member administering this program, and will be working closely with Dr. Nozomi Shimonohara, a Purdue University alumna and anatomic pathologist at Idexx laboratories in Tokyo, Japan and Dr. Toshinori Yoshida, Associate Professor of Pathology at Tokyo University College of Agriculture and Technology and the Cooperative Department of Veterinary Medicine.

Country: Japan

Length of Program and Anticipated number of credit hours: This program will be fifteen days long and will cover 3 credit hours. Students will be asked to achieve a baseline of pathology knowledge, determined by Dr. Lyle, prior to departing for Japan. Dr. Lyle will meet with all students, weekly one month prior to departure to review the basics of anatomic pathology and clinical pathology that will be required for acquisition of credit hours. Students will be asked to complete a 5-page discussion paper on their return trip back, that discusses the cases that were evaluated and cross-cultural learning that was most beneficial to them.
