The Vet Up!® DVM Scholars program provides academic, social, and financial support post-matriculation to five educationally or economically disadvantaged Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine D.V.M. degree students per year, to support them from matriculation to a timely graduation from their veterinary medical degree program and employment in a veterinary shortage area. Completion of Vet Up! College is required for eligibility.

Eligibility

Application Process

  • Applications will automatically be sent to all eligible students after they have achieved early admission to the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine D.V.M. degree program through the Access to Animal-Related Careers Scholars program or the Vet Up! College Early Admissions program

Program Curriculum 

To be eligible for financial support and remain in the Vet Up! DVM Scholars program, students must participate in the following structured curriculum during all four years of their veterinary medical program, maintain at least a 1.7/4.0 grade point average in all courses, and a minimum program index of 2.50 with no scholastic deficiencies. 

Learning

  • Meet once per semester with professors in courses to determine how they can better perform
  • Meet each evening for daily structured group study sessions
  • Develop a Professional Focus Profile (PFP), a strategy to gain and document experiences that will lead to desired career goals
  • Review and revise PFP as experiences are documented
  • Convert PFP into resume for job application
  • Participate in a student ambassador program to develop leadership and communication skills

Social Support

  • Meet twice each semester with the PVM Psychologist
  • Develop a plan to maintain and track wellness
  • Track wellness indicators (sleep, fatigue, nutrition, stress)
  • Meet monthly with mentor to review and revise wellness plan and implement strategies for personal and professional success
  • Meet for a monthly roundtable lunch and participate in peer mentoring, career planning, and wellness activities facilitated by program leaders

Equity-Mindedness

  • Complete the Student Certificate for Diversity and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine
  • Become a member of Purdue Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinarians as One Inclusive Community for Empowerment (VOICE) chapter
  • Participate in monthly VOICE activities
  • Hold a leadership position in a student organization
  • Attend an Iverson Bell Symposium or Regional Summit
  • Participate in a summer study abroad program or equivalent activity to develop multicultural competencies and expanded global consciousness
  • Participate in field experiences in veterinary shortage areas
  • Participate in a summer internship/externship gaining experience in a veterinary shortage area at a government agency, translational research lab, industry, or rural/food animal practice, or study abroad.

Financial Support

  • Students will receive scholarships of $8,000 in the first year and fourth (last) year of the D.V.M. degree program.
  • Students will receive up to $1,260 in stipends in each of years 2 and 3 of the D.V.M. program to offset expenses of a required 3-week field experience. Please note: stipends can only be provided to students not enrolled in a regular course of education leading to their health professions degree; and, for activities with no other Federal financial assistance.
