The Vet Up!® College program is a six-week-long residential summer program at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine for 26 educationally or economically disadvantaged undergraduate students each year that will prepare students to be competitive in the DVM applicant pool. Vet Up! College is geared towards rising college juniors and seniors. Vet Up! College replaces Purdue Veterinary Medicine’s Access to Animal-Related Careers (A2RC) 2-week-long summer program which has been discontinued.

Eligibility

Requirements

  • Students are required to travel to West Lafayette, Indiana and actively participate in Vet Up! College sessions, 7-days-a-week for 6 total weeks, at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine. Financial support towards travel costs will be provided.
  • Students are required to remain on campus during the duration of the program with the exception of off-campus programming that is part of the Vet Up! College curriculum.
  • Students are required to conduct themselves in a collegial and professional manner in accordance with the values of Purdue Veterinary Medicine.

  • Applications must be typed or handwritten in print (no cursive)

Vet Up! College Program Curriculum 

Vet Up! College participants will work with current Purdue Veterinary Medicine faculty, staff, and students while experiencing aspects of all four years of the DVM curriculum including coursework, exams, animal experience, career exploration, mentorship, strategies to minimize educational debt, and cultural competence training. Vet Up! College participants will also develop strategies to prepare a competitive application for a veterinary medical program. Vet Up! College participants will receive a certificate upon completion of program requirements.

Learning

  • Weeks 1 and 2 will represent the first year of the DVM curriculum and will focus on the healthy animal. Coursework will include lectures, labs, and exams in Foundations in Basic Medical Sciences, Anatomy, Cell and Tissue Biology, Physiology, Behavior, Population Medicine and Veterinary Skills.
  • Weeks 3 and 4 will represent the second year of the DVM curriculum and will focus on the unhealthy animal. Coursework will include lectures, labs, and exams in Pharmacology, Parasitology, Pathology, and Bacteriology. Students will solve veterinary cases in teams using problem-based learning strategies.
  • Weeks 5 and 6 will represent the clinical years of the DVM curriculum and will focus on learning from veterinarians specializing in a variety of careers and gaining experiences with many animal species.
  • Important issues in the veterinary profession such as the Human-Animal Bond, Animal Welfare, The Opioid Epidemic, Clinical and Translational Research, and the Veterinarian’s Role in Food Safety and Security will be explored.
  • A team project on a veterinary shortage area will be completed.
  • Walking tours of the Purdue University West Lafayette campus and the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine will be experienced.

Support

  • Develop effective strategies for learning and setting career goals, overcoming obstacles, communicating, and sustaining progress towards your goals
  • Learn approaches to improve self-care and wellness while managing stress and compassion fatigue
  • Learn what it takes to prepare a competitive application for veterinary medical school/college by exploring the application and admissions process, transcript review, and interview process
  • Minimize educational debt by getting current information regarding the costs of a veterinary medical education,  exploring financial support options (scholarships and loans), and developing personal finance strategies
  • Celebrate growth and success at key points in the program 

Equity-Mindedness

  • Complete the Student Certificate for Diversity and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine to develop multicultural competencies crucial for effective communication and teamwork
  • Participate in Community Service activities every weekend
  • Visit Cultural Centers for a new experience each week
  • Capitalize on the value of diverse teams through team projects and study sessions

Financial Support

  • Participants will receive up to $375.00 in support to travel to the program at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine 
  • Participants will receive free lodging during the six-week-long visit, and a stipend of $60 per day for the 42 days to cover all other expenses including meals. Please note: stipends can only be provided to students not enrolled in a regular course of education leading to their health professions degree; and, for activities with no other Federal financial assistance.

  • The college of veterinary medicine is committed to making all aspects of our program accessible.  The Vet Up! College program has components requiring high levels of physical activity such as walking outdoors (concrete, grass, uneven surfaces, muddy areas, etc.) multiple times per day and working with a variety of species of animals.

Bonus

Vet Up! College participants with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25/4.00 by the start of Vet Up! College, who are enrolled in undergraduate studies, have not earned a college degree, and have not yet applied to another DVM degree program will be invited to apply to Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine through a highly competitive early admissions process. If accepted through the Vet Up! College Early Admissions program, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25/4.00, successfully complete all prerequisite classes (> C-) required by Purdue Veterinary Medicine, and agree not to apply to any other college of veterinary medicine. The selection approach will be holistic, considering both academic and non-academic factors.
