Histology Services

Services - The Histology Research Laboratory is a full service histology laboratory that provides tissue embedding, slide preparation, staining and immunohistochemistry service:

  • Embedding: paraffin, plastic or OCT medium (frozen tissue).

  • Slide preparation: microtome (paraffin and plastic), cryostat (frozen tissue), or with EXAKT cutting and grinding instrumentation (plastic embedded undecalcified bone and implants).

  • Histological stains: Paraffin sections are routinely stained with Hemotoxylin and Eosin (H&E). Other stains we commonly use are Toluidine Blue, Masson's Trichrome, and Von Kossa. Other stains are available upon request.

  • Immunohistochemistry: Available upon request.

Sample submission and pick-Up – Samples can be submitted to the Histology Research Laboratory in Rm B15 in the basement of the Veterinary Pathology Research Building (VPRB). The manager is available for consultation regarding tissue submission and processing during opening hours. Consultations by appointment are preferred (Histology@purdue.edu) and are recommended for first time users or at the beginning of a new project. These consultations also may include providing an estimate of cost of services.

The laboratory will let clients know via email when slides are ready. Slides can be picked up in Rm B15 in the basement of the Veterinary Pathology Research Building during regular opening hours.

The Histology Research Laboratory’s daily opening hours are from 9-12 am and from 1-4 pm. The lab can be contacted via Histology@purdue.edu.

Pathology consultation and collaboration - Abigail Cox, DVM, PhD, DACVP (adcox@purdue.edu) and Sanjeev Narayanan, BVSc, PhD (sanjeev@purdue.edu), all board-certified pathologists in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology, are available for consultation and collaboration.
