September 9, 2009 Purdue to host Deming Institute conferenceWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Business people and students from across the country will gather at Purdue University to explore the philosophy of the man credited with improving manufacturing processes and quality control in the United States and Japan.The W. Edwards Deming Institute Fall Conference will be Oct. 10-11 in Purdue's Stewart Center. Deming's principles have been key to improving efficiency and quality in a wide variety of U.S. and Japanese businesses, said Jim Windle, professor of organizational leadership and supervision. His teachings, going back to post-World War II Japan, were the beginning of today's Total Quality Management model, which has been adopted by companies throughout the world. The fall conference will focus on the individual. Speakers include V.L. "Bill" Cooper, managing partner for DEMCOM Consulting Group, which teaches the Deming principles; Mary Jenkins, an organization development consultant; John Edelman, professor of philosophy at Nazareth College of Rochester, N.Y.; Andrew McKeon, founder of carbonRational, which helps clients develop sustainability plans; David P. Langford, a consultant and trainer on improving the quality of education and its correlation to business and the economy; Mike Tveite, principal statistician at Boston Scientific CRM; and Melvin Villerreal, senior member of the American Society for Quality and authorized trainer of the ASQ Koalaty Kid approach to improving elementary education. Cost of the conference is $250.
