Appointments, honors and activities

• Campus activities:

— Approximately 100 Purdue student leaders participated in the 10th annual Student Leaders Retreat on Aug. 19-21 at Camp Tecumseh in Brookston, Ind. The event was sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, and the theme for the 2009 event was "On the Right Track Towards Leadership." The Student Activities and Organizations division of the Office of the Dean of Students planned and led the event, which focused on leadership and organizational developmental skills, fundraising and marketing.

— Purdue's Department of Child Development and Family Studies partnered with Indiana University and the Indiana Association for the Education of Young Children for the fifth annual Infant-Toddler Specialists of Indiana Institute. This year's statewide training served more than 200 professionals who work with children under 3. The institute was Aug. 20 and 21. Doug Powell, distinguished professor of child development and family studies, was a keynote speaker. Other faculty and staff from the department who made presentations include German Posada, Volker Thomas, Jane Harvey and James Elicker.

• Faculty and staff honors:

— Agricultural economics professors Matthew T. Holt and John M. Connor of the Department of Agricultural Economics were named Fellows of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association. This is the highest honor that can be given in the agricultural economics industry by peers.  

— Cyber forensics professor Marcus K. Rogers has received the Paul H. Chapman award from the Foundation for Improvement of Justice, Inc. The $10,000 award recognizes Rogers' contributions to improving the nation's ability to fight computer crime by serving as a consultant and creating training programs for local, state, and federal officers in the use of cyber forensics investigation.

— At the 2009 annual Poultry Science Association meeting, Purdue employees received recognition and awards for their outstanding work in the poultry industry. Patricia (Scotti) Hester Professor of Animal Sciences, became a Fellow of the Poultry Science Association. Joe Garner Assistant Professor of Animal Sciences, was presented the Poultry Science Early Achievement Award. Todd Applegate, associate professor of animal sciences, received the American Feed Industry Association Poultry Nutrition Research Award and the Maple Leaf Farms Duck Research Award. Rachel Dennis, graduate research assistant, received the Alltech Student Research Manuscript Award.

— Susan Melson Huffman, general manager at Owen Residence Hall, has been sworn in as president of the National Council of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for First Year Students. Huffman took the office at the conclusion of the Society's National Council Meeting in late June. Her service with Alpha Lambda Delta began in 1984, and 2009 marks her 25th year as adviser to the Purdue chapter. She has served on the National Council in various capacities, including as member-at-large, and filling two three-year terms as vice president for chapter relations and Expansion from 2002-08. The Society is in its 85th year.

— Purdue University's Marriage and Family Therapy Program placed first in a variety of categories that were published in an independent study of scholarly productivity among marriage and family therapy doctoral programs by the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy. The results summary of the journal's article also reported Purdue was first among the five most productive programs in the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education-accredited doctoral programs. Doug Sprenkle, professor and director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program and director of the Individual, Couple and Family Therapy Clinic, was listed among the most prolific authors and was third in the nation for most widely cited articles in this area. The program is housed in the College of Consumer and Family Sciences' Department of Child Development and Family Studies.
