Appointments, honors and activities

• Appointments and promotions

- Lindsey Purcell has been hired as an urban forestry specialist in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources. Purcell has served as forestry supervisor and city forester in Indianapolis, director of operations for The Nature Conservancy of Indiana and as an adjunct instructor of horticulture technology at Vincennes University. He will work with the Indiana Arborists Association to develop an Extension program for the urban forestry community. He starts in his new position in August.

• Faculty and staff honors

- Jules Janick, a professor of horticulture in the Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture, was inducted into the American Society for Horticultural Science Hall of Fame during the society's annual meeting in St. Louis. The Hall of Fame is the group's highest honor. Janick received the honor for his work and dedication to the horticulture industry, including being one of the first horticultural scientists to employ biotechnological propagation techniques. Also, he has worked on scientific research involving orchard and forest trees, fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants, and was a pioneer researcher in somatic embryogenesis and synthetic seed technology.

- William E. Field, professor of agricultural and biological engineering in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, was named to the 2009 class of fellows of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers during its annual meeting in Reno. Field was honored as a national leader in Extension farm safety education and research and for helping train graduate students in the agricultural safety field. Field is the founder of the Breaking New Ground Resource Center, which serves the needs of farmers and ranchers who have been impacted by disabilities.

- Christian Butzke, associate professor of food science, has been named president of the American Society of Enology and Viticulture for the 2009-10 term. He will lead a 12-member board of the non-profit professional society dedicated to the advancement of wine and grape research and production. Butzke has been a member of the group since 1993 and has been a member of the board of directors for five years.
