June 15, 2009 Purdue offers new resources for equine judging teamsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's Cooperative Extension Service is offering a new instructional DVD on horse judging through its Education Store. The DVD, "Horse Judging at Purdue: Multi-breed Judging," was authored by Colleen Brady, Purdue Extension equine specialist. It offers instruction on improving judging skills in a variety of classes, including AQHA Western Pleasure, 4-H Western Pleasure, AQHA Hunter Under Saddle, 4-H Hunter Under Saddle, Quarter Horse Geldings, Saddle Type Geldings and Haflinger Yearlings. "This DVD was created with youth judging teams in mind," Brady said. "The horses are similar in quality to what would be seen at many county, regional and state contests, and special effort was made to include the variety of breeds that would be seen at a 4-H or open show. Furthermore, the performance classes include footage of the transitions to each gait, so judges can assess the transitions, as well as rail work in these classes." In addition to the DVD, Purdue Extension: The Education Store offers a printed horse-judging manual. DVDs are $15 each, and manuals are $12. Or, teams can order a package of four manuals and a DVD for $55. Both can be found on the Education Store Web site at https://secure.agriculture.purdue.edu/store/item.asp?itemID=19120 Also available through the store is the "Our First Horse" DVD, which provides all the tools families need when they consider buying their first horse. It covers topics on ways to pick the appropriate horse, nutritional needs, riding lessons, facilities and pastures, equipment needs and more. "Our First Horse" can be previewed and ordered via the Education Store Web site at https://www.extension.purdue.edu/horse/index.html Questions about either DVD or the judging manuals should be directed to the Education Store at 888-EXT-INFO (398-4636).
