FBI official to deliver keynote at Purdue mobile forensics conference

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A leading computer crime expert with the FBI will deliver the keynote address at the Purdue-sponsored Mobile Forensics World Conference in Chicago.

Rick Voss, a supervisory special agent with the FBI's Chicago bureau, will speak about his experience in digital evidence collection. His talk will be at 8:15 a.m. May 27 at the O'Hare Marriott in Chicago.

Voss will be among a variety of experts, investigators and researchers from around the world to take part in the second Mobile Forensics World Conference from May 26-30.

The conference brings together those who specialize in forensic investigation of small-scale digital devices, such as cell phones and other mobile devices. It is believed to be the only conference in the world focusing on digital forensics.

Voss joined the FBI in 1997, first as a public corruptions investigator, then as a certified computer forensic examiner and cell phone/PDA examiner. From 2003-07, he directed the Chicago Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory. In 2007 he became chief of the Computer Analysis Response Team. The next year, he became assistant section chief of the FBI's digital evidence section, where he oversees five digital forensic units.

The conference will include educational sessions and discussions on the forensic examination of mobile or portable devices, such as cell phones, personal digital assistants, SmartPhones and GPS devices; media card and handset analysis; cell site analysis; call data record analysis; mobile forensics research; and current and future technologies and applications. A forum on iPhone forensics and certifications will be new this year.

Rick Mislan, an assistant professor of computer and information technology at Purdue, is organizing the conference. Purdue's Cyber Forensics Lab, housed in the Department of Computer and Information Technology in the College of Technology, sponsors the event.

The conference is open to federal, state and local forensic specialists; corporate and private forensic examiners; industry leaders; and academic researchers.
